Stylish and hypnotic, Pan’s Labyrinth takes place five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War. It follows a bookish yet adventurous girl who gets lost amidst the fantastic creatures of an ancient labyrinth—a magical world directly contrasting the tyrannical reality of the fascist armies terrorizing her small town. With a rich visual style and creatures that remain unmatched, the film vividly depicts how a child’s imagination can process real-world monstrosities.
